Martin County made the trip across the state to Reed Conder Gymnasium to play the Lady Marshals in the 10:30 a.m. game on Saturday in the Hoopfest. From Region 15, the Lady Cardinals were 23-7 last season.

It took more than four quarters in the hard-fought game to determine the outcome and after the four-minute overtime period, Martin County came out with a 45-42 win.

“That’s a good team”, said Lady Marshals Head Coach Jimmie Holder to WCBL. “It was a better start than in Thursday’s game against Lyon. All in all, a good effort.”

Containing Martin County’s Laken Williams would be a challenge. The junior scored 26 points that earned game MVP honors.

The Lady Marshals got off to a hot start and held the lead until Martin County tied it at 8-8 then went up 11-8 on a 3-pointer by Williams who scored all of the Lady Cardinals 11 points. Peyton Weitlauf scored for the Lady Marshals to cut the lead to 13-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Outscoring Martin County 11-7 in the second quarter, the Lady Marshals took a 21-20 lead at halftime, led by five points from Mia Teague who hit a buzzer beater three. Williams finished the half with 17 of the Lady Cardinals points. Laken Schroader had seven to lead the Lady Marshals.

Georgia Hall dropped in the first four points of the second half followed by a basket from Chevelle Henson that gave them their largest lead of the game by eight while holding Martin County to their first field goal of the third quarter at the 1:50 mark. A three by Schroader ended the quarter on a 34-28 lead.

Martin County outscored the Lady Marshals 12-6 in the fourth quarter to draw the game even. Williams hit two free throws with 7.7 seconds remaining to tie the game up at 40 with a last effort 3-pointer for the win by Teague.

In overtime, Williams hit a quick 3-pointer and the Lady Cardinals began to use up the clock. A couple of missed free throws by Martin County and steal and basket by Izzy Washburn cut the game to one point. Freshman Brooklyn Marcum hit two all-important free throws for Martin County to make it a three-point game. Teague and Schroader both sent up 3-point attempts to tie before the buzzer sounded.

Schroader finished with a team high 10 points followed by eight from Hall and Weitlauf.

The Lady Marshals will travel to Hickman County for a game on Tuesday.
