Marshals open season with 66-29 win over Crittenden County

Senior Wade Moore came up with a turnover and headed to the other end to drop in two of his seven points in the Marshals win over Crittenden County to open the 2022-2023 basketball season.

Head Coach Sawyer Donohoo picked up his first win in the Marshals 66-29 season opener over Crittenden County on Tuesday. Donohoo, a former Marshall County player, took over head coaching duties after six years as an assistant at Marshall County under Terry Birdsong.

Crittenden County is also led this season by a new head coach who just happens to be another former player, D.J. Pigg, who took over for Denis Hodge who coached the Rockets the past 11 seasons. Pigg, a 2016 graduate, holds Marshall County records for most career 3-pointers (246), most 3-pointers in a game (10) and is a member of the 1,000 point club.

Donohoo was pleased with his team’s performance in the season opener with scoring spread among 11 players in the 66-point night.

“I thought we competed…I thought we played hard and did a pretty good job on the defensive end”, Donohoo said in post-game comments on WCBL. “We moved the ball really well tonight. Love to see the scoring spread out with lots of guys getting some action.”

Hunter Wallace scored the first bucket of the 2022-23 season followed by a 3-pointer from Crittenden County’s Travis Champion to give the Rockets their only lead of the game. Trey Wall hit his first three attempt of the season and it was all Marshall County from there. Wallace led in the first quarter with seven points and a long three before the buzzer by Tommy Robertson put the Marshals up 23-6.

Wade Moore opened the second quarter scoring with a 3-pointer. Wall dropped in two of his three team-leading 3-pointers of the game while leading the Marshals with eight points in the quarter to give them a 43-15 lead at halftime.

Six different players combined for the Marshals 17 points in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 60-26 and their largest lead of 38 points came in the fourth quarter on the way to a 37-point victory.

Seniors Wall and Wallace led the Marshals with 11 points each and junior Orrin Phelps joined them in double figures with 10 points. Two players from Crittenden County did most of their scoring. Jaxon Hatfield led with 14 and Champion had 12. Of the Rockets 29 points, 21 came from behind the arc.

The Marshals hit 7-of-18 threes in the game, were 11-of-15 at the free throw line and had 21 rebounds.

They will play two games in the Marshall County Hoopfest starting with a 4:00 game on Friday against Clarksville Academy. On Saturday at noon they will play Christian Academy of Louisville.
