Marshals season ends in 54-7 playoff loss to Simon Kenton

Marshall County traveled to Independence, Ky. to play Simon Kenton out of the 6th District in the first round of the Class 6A football playoffs on Friday. The 6A top 10 ranked Pioneers were 2-9 last season and have turned things around in 2022, coming into the playoffs with a 7-3 record.

They are led by the play of 4-year starting quarterback Chase Crone who has over 6,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing in his career and is Simon Kenton’s all-time passing leader.

It was a dominant night for the Pioneers who built a 41-0 lead in the second quarter, enacting the running clock before halftime, winning 54-7 and advancing to play Trinity next Friday.

The Marshals received the opening kick and turned it over on a punt to Simon Kenton who scored on their first play from scrimmage on a 44-yard run by senior Jayden Lawson. Another short field for the Pioneers after the Marshals punt, set up their second touchdown on the second play of the drive, Crone going the final yard and the lead was 14-0.

Simon Kenton scored their next three touchdowns from inside Marshall County territory on short drives from the 43, the 17 and the 29 to lead 34-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Pioneers scored from 40 yards out early in the second quarter to lead 41-0 which initiated the running clock and they went up 48-0 before halftime.

With Simon Kenton starters on the sidelines the second half, the Marshals forced their first punt of the game. After picking up a first down, the first of the night, they put together an 81-yard drive and seven points on the board. Nix going the final yard for the score and the point after by Logan Parker.

Simon Kenton put their final points up late in the fourth quarter for a 54-7 lead and with time running out, junior Jordan Clapp gave the Marshals a big return on the kickoff before the final buzzer.

The Marshals end the 2022 season with a record of 3-8.
