Marshals finish regular season with loss to Graves County

Wilson Shadowen, pictured here in the Marshals game earlier this season against Calloway County, ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown to give the Marshals an early 7-0 lead against Graves County.

In their final regular season game of 2022, Marshall County (3-6) traveled to Graves County (5-4) to play the Eagles for the 33rd straight year. The Marshals last win over Graves County came in 2005 and a win would break the streak of 16 consecutive losses, but it was not to be with the Eagles 49-14 win.

It was an exciting start to the night when the Marshals received the opening kick, into the hands of senior Wilson Shadowen who ran it all the way for a touchdown and early 7-0 lead after Logan Parker’s extra point kick split the uprights.

The Eagles tied it 7-7 less than two minutes later on a 65-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kaden Gregory to Cade Goatley. They took a 14-7 lead after Kendall Lawrence intercepted a Marshall County pass, took it down to the one-yard line and scored on a keeper by Gregory.

Graves County scored four second quarter touchdowns to amass a 43-7 lead at halftime and they opened the second half with their seventh and final touchdown with three minutes left in the third quarter to take a 49-7 lead.

The Marshals found the endzone once more on a keeper by Conner Nix and with Parker’s PAT, ended the night on a 49-14 loss.

The Eagles finished with 477 yards of offense. Gregory was 13-of-17 in passing for 256 yards and four touchdowns. Cole Katzman led on the ground with 94 yards on 12 carries and Goatley caught six passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

Coming into Friday’s game, Landon Utley ranked 21st among Class 6A rushers with 530 yards on 100 carries and ranked 15th in tackles with an average of 7.9 per game. Parker was sixth in PATs with 29 made of 32 attempts and Gavin Clark ranked 12th in interceptions with three on 25 yards of return.

The Marshals will play at Simon Kenton (7-3) in next Friday’s opening round of the Class 6A state playoffs. Simon Kenton ranks second in the state behinds St. Xavier in KHSAA RPI standings. The Eagles will host South Warren next Friday in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.
