Marshals earn big win over Lakers 56-14

Luke Webber scored the Marshals final two of their eight touchdowns in Friday’s 56-14 win over Calloway County.

Marshall County leads the all-time series against Calloway County 27-7 dating back to 1979 coming into Friday’s game at Carroll Traylor Stadium, but it’s the last two seasons that were utmost on their minds – a 33-0 loss in 2020 and 41-20 loss last season to the Lakers.

At the end of 48 minutes of play, the Marshals avenged those last two losses with a 56-14 win over the Lakers and they improve to 3-1.

Calloway County received the opening kick but on the second play from scrimmage, Dylan Robinson intercepted quarterback Wyatt Robbins, his first of two interceptions in the game. Kameron Bowerman bulldozed his way to the one-yard line then took it the final yard for the touchdown. Logan Parker added the extra point for a 7-0 lead less than two minutes in.

Aiden Dunigan (27) scored three touchdowns on a 38-yard run, 18-yard reception and 44 yard run to help lead the Marshals to their third win of the season.

On the kickoff, Tate Weatherly had a big return for the Lakers to midfield, but the drive would stall out. A 33-yard field goal attempt by Oscar Avila was blocked and picked up by Bowerman who took the ball 77 yards for a touchdown and with Parker’s PAT, the Marshals led 14-0.

The Lakers got on the board on their next drive, scoring on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Robbins to Weatherly and with the point after good by Avila, the score was 14-7.

The Marshals wasted little time getting on the board once again before the end of the first quarter. Aiden Dunigan scored from the 38-yard line, capping off a 67-yard drive, to take a 21-7 lead into the second quarter.

Bowerman scored the Marshals fourth TD on a seven-yard run to put the Marshals up 28-7 in the second quarter but the Lakers would trim it again, scoring on a 38-yard pass from Robbins to Levi Weatherford with 3:43 left in the half.

The Marshals worked the clock in their favor in the final seconds of the half and with 17 seconds to go, scored on an 18-yard pass from Conner Nix to Dunigan and with the extra point tacked on by Parker, took a 35-14 lead into halftime.

Quarterback Conner Nix picks up some yards against the Lakers with help from Kameron Bowerman (25) and Parker Gibbs (4).

Marshall County scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, the first on a 44-yard run by Dunigan and the second on a 28-yard run by Luke Webber on 67- and 52-yard drives. The lead was 49-14 heading into the fourth quarter.

Webber scored the final touchdown of the night on a seven-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The Marshals have now outscored their opponents in their three wins this season 164 to 20.

They will host McCracken County (0-4) next Friday in the first district game on the schedule. The Mustangs lost 49-26 to Mayfield on Friday and are still looking for their first win. McCracken County and Marshall County have met on the gridiron five times since 2013 and the Mustangs have won all five.
