Marshals take down Tornados 5-2

Zander Maxlow, in Tuesday’s win over Murray, scored the Marshals go-ahead goal in the second half on their way to a 5-2 win over Paducah Tilghman.

The Marshals won their 20th straight game over Paducah Tilghman at Colburn Stadium on Thursday, but the Blue Tornados didn’t go down as easy this time in the 5-2 final. The two goals were the most scored against the Marshals since Paducah Tilghman’s last win dating back 16 years when they won 3-0 in the regional tournament. The Marshals shutout the Blue Tornados 10-0 in each of the last two seasons.

After a winless 2021 season, Paducah Tilghman came into Tuesday’s game with two wins over Trigg County and Lyon County and former Marshall County player, Blaine Skeen, is in his fourth season as head coach.

A hand ball penalty in the box by Tilghman’s Tate Kirchoff gave the Marshals their first opportunity to score, but Evan Jericho’s penalty kick was saved by goalkeeper Blain Oliver.

Tilghman was the first to get on the board on a goal by Myles Middleton but the equalizer for the Marshals came immediately after off the foot of Evans and the game remained 1-1 at halftime.

After 17 minutes of play in the second half, Zander Maxlow gave the Marshals a 2-1 lead with the assist by Tommy Robertson. Evans scored his second of the night and the Marshals went up 4-1 when Logan Parker scored on a header off an assist from Nathan Blakney.

Tilghman scored their second goal of the game with just over nine minutes remaining to cut the Marshals lead in half but a goal by Isaac Reynolds with under five to go finished off the 5-2 win.

In unofficial stats, Steve Claborn had six saves and Tilghman’s Oliver had nine. The Marshals improve to 8-2 and currently rank ninth in the state according to KHSAA’s RPI standings.
