
James Tollie Brown, 94, of Columbus, Kentucky passed away on Monday, May 23, 2022 at his home.
James was born in Arlington, Kentucky on November 30, 1927 to George and Mable Woods Brown. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and WWII, receiving the WWII Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal Japan. James went to work on the river at the age of 15 where he worked as a tow boat captain. After 51 years on the river, he retired from Sioux City and New Orleans Barge Company. He was the oldest member of Columbus Baptist Church where he taught the adult Sunday school class. James enjoyed raising cattle, spending time fishing and bossing his son around. More than anything, he loved his family and all his grandchildren.
He is survived by his son, James A. Brown, and wife, Cindy of Columbus; one sister, Kay Mix and husband, Jakie of Arlington; three grandchildren, Renee (Henry) Cole, Lauren (Jason) Armbruster and Aaron (Christy) Brown; eight great-grandchildren, Jessie Roach, Tolley Cole, Anna Cole, Alliyah Lumson, Alexis Lumson, Anton Lumson, Eli Armbruster, Blythe Armbruster; one great great-grandchild, Kinsleigh Roach; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Wanda Sue Raymer Brown; two sisters, Ruby Poole and Thelma Hanner; one brother, Floyd Brown; and his parents.
A funeral service for James will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Arlington with Rev. Roger Wood and Rev. David Dixon officiating. Burial will follow at Columbus Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM service time on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Arlington.
