Marshall County ended the #4 ranked Paducah Tilghman (27-7) baseball season Monday with a first round 6-1 win to move on to the Region 1 semi-final Tuesday against Graves County, a winner over Carlisle County. Marshals ace Evan Oakley pitched the complete game win over the Blue Tornadoes, striking out 11, allowing four hits and giving up one run.
Alex Staples led off for the Marshals with a ground ball and reached on an error committed by Tilghman’s Anias Nunn at second base. Ethan Landis moved Staples over to third with a double and Chase Hayden brought him in for the first run with his ground ball out to first base. Landis scored on a wild pitch with Evan Oakley at the plate for the early 2-0 lead.
Two more runs in the bottom of the second for a 4-0 Marshals lead came on two outs. Staples and Landis each reached on singles. Staples scored on a double hit by Hayden and Landis crossed the plate on a single by Evan Oakley.
Tilghman put two on base in the top of the fifth with no outs but a ground ball hit by Nunn was converted into a double-play by the Marshals and the third out came on a fly ball hit by Gage Griggs. Tilghman avoided the shutout with a run in the top of the sixth, Burke Waggoner scoring when Gunner Massey hit into a fielder’s choice.
The Marshals put a stamp on the win with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth hit by Staples.
Tilghman put Jack James on base in the top of the seventh on an error before the baserunner was out advancing to second, then Oakley retired the top of order – Levin East out swinging and Griggs out looking.
Tuesday’s game will get underway at 5:30 at Graves County High School followed by the second semi-final between McCracken County and Calloway County.
