Marshall County and Calloway County have met in the championship game of the 4th District Tournament now for three straight seasons, the Lady Marshals winning in 2019 and 2021 going to the Lady Lakers. This year they split their regular season games, the first going to Calloway County 2-0 and the Lady Marshals taking the second 11-3. Tuesday’s game was scoreless through six innings before the only run of the night was scored by Calloway County in the seventh to get the 1-0 win and 2022 4th District title.
Leadoff hitters for each team came through in the first inning, Preslee Phillips with a single for the Lady Lakers and Charley Pursley with a double for the Lady Marshals. In the third inning, each team put a runner on – Marin Oakley on a walk and Calloway’s Emerson Herndon reached with a hit and both out advancing to second.
Chloe Coursey reached on an error in the fourth, then caught stealing second while Emerson Grogan drew a walk for Calloway in the fifth but left stranded and they headed to the sixth where each pitcher successfully put away the first three up.
Izzy Housden and Carson McReynolds, the first two up for Calloway in the top of the seventh, singled. Housden was replaced by courtesy runner Laila Clark and with Bailee Grogan’s fly out to Pursley in centerfield, Clark came in for the only run of the night.
Housden pitched the complete game win, striking out eight while allowing just one hit. Gracelyn Darnall went six and a third innings for the Lady Marshals, striking out two, allowing five hits and the single run. Allicen Harris pitched the final two-thirds of the seventh inning and struck out one.
Charley Pursley, Gracelyn Darnall, Madyson Morton and Anna Vasseur were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Both teams move on the to next week’s Region 1 Tournament.
