Two home runs, 15 hits lifts Lady Marshals over Calloway County

Madyson Morton heads to second base in the third inning in Tuesday’s game against Livingston Central. Morton went 2-for-3 in that game and Wednesday hit a home run in the Lady Marshals win over Calloway County.

An inside the park home run by Madyson Morton and home run by Tia Thorpe helped fuel a 6-run top of the third inning on the Lady Marshals way to an 11-3 district win over Calloway County. Earlier this season, the Lady Marshals lost 2-0 to the Lady Lakers, the win now giving them the district split.

Friday, the Lady Marshals will play Murray, a team they beat in the first district contest this season 8-0. Murray is 0-3 in district play. A win for the Lady Marshals would set up a tie at 3-1 with the Lady Lakers and a tiebreaker would determine the #1 seed for the district tournament.

Charley Pursley led the game off against Calloway County on Wednesday with a double, followed by hits from Anna Vasseur and Chloe Coursey who brought in the Lady Marshals first run. The Lady Lakers took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on a homer hit by Preslee Phillips.

The 6-run third inning began on Morton’s home run. Gracelyn Darnall drew a walk and came to the plate on Thorpe’s 2-run homer. Chevelle Henson walked, Marin Oakley’s sacrifice moved Henson over to second, a hit by Pursley put two base runners on and Vassuer’s double brought both of them to the plate. That was followed by a double from Coursey that brought in Vasseur for the 7-2 lead.

They stretched the lead to 10-2 in the fourth inning, the runs coming in on a double by Henson and 2-run single by Pursley. Coursey scored on an error for the final run of the night.

The Lady Marshals had 15 hits, led by Pursley who went 4-for-5 with a double and brought in two runs. Vasseur had three hits including a double and two RBIs and Coursey had two doubles and plated two runs among her three hits. Thorpe pitched the win over seven innings, allowing eight hits and three runs.
