Marshals early lead erased by McCracken County

Chase Hayden slides across home plate in the first inning, scoring the Marshals only run on a wild pitch in Monday’s 10-1 loss to McCracken County.

Marshall County struck first in Monday’s game against McCracken County, Chase Hayden scoring a run on a wild pitch by Daniel Higdon in the first inning. Hayden reached on a single, Evan Oakley drew a walk and Ty Davenport loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch before Hayden slid across home plate for the Marshals only run of the night in the 10-1 loss.

With dark skies looming, Conner Mannon hit a 2-out single in the bottom of the second, Chase Shelton and Ethan Landis drew walks before a lightning and rain delay that paused the game for an hour.

Out of the rain delay, the Mustangs replaced Higdon on the mound with Zach Sims who finished out the inning, leaving the two base runners stranded with the third out on a fly ball hit by Hayden.

The Mustangs got rolling in the top of the third on a hit by Cooper Ford, walk by Jack Bennett and Nate Lang single that brought Ford in for their first run of the game. A 2-out single by Scout Moffatt scored Bennett and Lang and a double hit by Sims brought in Moffatt for a 4-1 lead.

McCracken County took a 7-1 lead in the fourth inning, scoring on a solo home run by Ford and a couple of wild pitches by Hayden who relieved starter Reese Oakley on the mound.

The Mustangs scored two more runs in the fifth on a double by Bennett and an error and their final run in the seventh when a bases loaded ground out brought Miller Green to home plate.

Maddox Cope led off the bottom of the seventh for the Marshals with a double, Conner Mannon took base after he was hit by a pitch and Wilson Shadowen singled to load the bases but all three left were stranded with the final three outs of the game.

The Mustangs picked up their 20th program win over the Marshals and lead the all-time series 20-1.

Sims earned the win for the Mustangs in four and a third innings of work, striking out seven while giving up one hit and no runs.
