Driver hits walk-off grand slam in Marshals 9-5 win over Murray

Sophomore Jace Driver hit a grand slam in the ninth inning to give the Marshals a 9-5 win and sweep this week over district foe Murray.

Completing the regular season district sweep of Murray on Thursday in dramatic style, the Marshals won 9-5 in the ninth inning on a walk-off grand slam by Jace Driver.

Down 5-4 to start the bottom of the ninth, the bases were loaded up on a single by Parker Gibbs, walk from Chase Shelton and bunt by Ethan Landis that set up the tying run by Gibbs on a Chase Hayden sacrifice. An intentional walk on Evan Oakley kept the bases loaded and after a strike out on Ty Davenport, Driver stepped up to hit the homer on two outs.

Murray took an early 4-0 lead in the second inning. Doubles by Carson Garner and Nick Holcomb, Jack Elmore’s ground ball plated Cortino Allen and a sacrifice hit by Kobe Watson brought the four runs in.

The Marshals wasted no time cutting the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the inning. Walks by Davenport and Driver put runners on but a double play by Murray left Davenport the lone baserunner at third. Reece Oakley reached base on an error and Davenport scored on the same error to put the Marshals on the board. Gibbs reached on an error and Shelton took base after he was hit by a pitch. A single by Evan Landis scored Oakley and Gibbs.

Evan Oakley struck out 13 batters over seven innings, walked two, allowed four hits and four runs.

Evan Oakley took base after he was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fifth and courtesy runner Alex Staples crossed home plate off a fly ball hit by Davenport to tie the game at 4-4.

Still knotted up at 4-4, the game went into extra innings. Murray left two stranded in the top of the eighth and three up and three down for the Marshals sent the game into the ninth. The Tigers took a 5-4 lead on a double by Abram McNutt before the Marshals walk-off grand slam for the 9-4 win in the bottom of the inning.

They improve to 16-8 and 3-1 in the 4th District.

The Marshals will play at Logan County at 6:00 Friday and Saturday at Christian County at 2:30.
