Marshals split games against district foe Calloway County

Reese Oakley pitched four and a third innings, struck out five while allowing six hits and five runs to take the win in the Marshals 7-6 district game against Calloway County.

The Marshals wrapped up a four-game week with two losses and two wins and their record stands at 14-8. Last week began on Tuesday with a 7-6 district win over Calloway County, then the Lakers returned the favor by beating the Marshals 4-3 on Thursday. Friday, they split their two games in the Dinger Wood Bat Classic, starting with a 4-3 loss to Windsor and beat Central Magnet 3-2 in the night cap.

Tuesday’s 7-6 win at Calloway County came on nine hits. A 4-0 lead after four innings vanished with a five-run bottom of the fifth by the Lakers. The Marshals added three runs in the top of the third to take the lead back at 7-5 and the Lakers cut it to one with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Evan Oakley was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Ty Davenport went 2-for-3 with four big RBI’s. Reese Oakley earned the win over four and a third innings, striking out five, allowing six hits and five runs.

Alex Staples gave the Marshals a 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning but a 4-run top of the fourth for Calloway County was enough for the Lakers to even the district series 1-1 on Thursday in Draffenville.

The Marshals added a run in the bottom of the third when Chase Shelton scored on a wild pitch and they cut the Lakers lead to 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the seventh when Ethan Landis reached on an error that brought Reese Oakley in to score.

The Marshals six hits were collected by Chase Shelton and Jace Driver with two hits and one each from Staples and Chase Hayden. Evan Oakley took the loss after striking out 11 batters over six innings while allowing six hits and four runs.

After trailing 4-0 after five innings, the Marshals rallied to scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh but fell short in the 4-3 loss to Windsor. Alex Staples hit a double that brought in the two runs in the sixth inning and a sacrifice by Parker Gibbs scored the third run in the seventh and  the tying run was left stranded with the third out.

In their six hits in the game, three were doubles off the bats of Jace Driver, Staples and Chase Hayden. Driver took the loss, allowing six hits, four runs and struck out three.

In their second game of the night on Friday, the Marshals trailed 2-0 to Central Magnet in the bottom of the seventh before Parker Gibbs scored on a ground ball by Reese Oakley who reached on an error. Chase Shelton stepped to the plate and hit a walk-off single that scored Ethan Landis and Conner Mannon to get the 3-2 win.

Gavin Clark earned the win, pitching five and a third innings. The sophomore stuck out six, allowed six hits and two runs.
