Winter mix moving across the region tonight and Thursday
PADUCAH, Ky. (Feb. 23, 2022) – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 highway crews are on the road spreading salt as a winter storm moves through bringing freezing rain and sleet.
Trucks are out in McCracken, Lyon, Graves, Hickman, and Carlisle counties treating bridges, overpasses, and other potential trouble spots. Crews in some of the district’s other counties are starting to report in. Some counties expect to transition to treating “A” Snow and Ice Priority Routes in the next hour or two.
Crews are working in shifts to allow snow-fighting activities to be maintained tonight and through Thursday morning.
Due to the likelihood of ice accumulations of up to 1/2 inch from the freezing rain in the Paducah area, the KYTC District 1 Snow and Ice Team encourages area motorists to avoid travel during the overnight hours. Motorists should maintain a high level of awareness of localized weather conditions which may change mile by mile.
While warm pavement temperatures will likely help highway crews and motorists early in the event, dropping temps, wind, and developing ice will create the potential for hazardous driving as we go into the overnight hours. Motorists traveling to the north and west through Illinois and Missouri should be aware that those areas will likely get more significant ice and sleet accumulation numbers.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet personnel remind you that when ice is in the forecast, crews are limited in their ability to improve travel conditions. Please avoid travel tonight. If you do travel, use appropriate caution.
