Lady Marshals three-peat as 4th District Champions

The Lady Marshals defeated Calloway County 59-34 to win their third straight 4th District Title.

For the third straight year, the Lady Marshals raised the 4th District Tournament championship trophy on Monday after defeating Calloway County 59-34.

“We have that kind of effort and we shoot the ball that well…we’ll have a shot”, Coach Aaron Beth said of heading into the Region 1 Tournament and their quest for a third straight and the program’s 25th title.

Following a 4-4 start to the game, the Lady Marshals went on an 11-0 run. The first five points of the run coming from Skylar Waller, a basket by Jada Driver and a 3-pointer from Mia Teague. Threes dropped in by Driver and Langhi wrapped up a 24-11 first quarter lead.

Waller converted an ‘and 1′ play to start the second quarter on a 27-11 lead followed by Calloway’s only two points of the quarter from Sayler Lowe. Waller and Teague each hit their second 3-pointers of the half and the lead was 35-13 at halftime.

“We came out from the opening tip tonight with intensity and enthusiasm”, said Beth. “We held them to two baskets in the first half. They made some free throws but our defense was really solid again and then we knocked down shots. Had four different people make threes, four people in double figures…we have to have that.”

Both teams put up 11 third quarter points to hold the Lady Marshals lead at 22 points. Langhi led with six while five different players scored for the Lady Lakers.

The largest lead of the game came in the fourth quarter at 59-32 following Teague’s fourth 3-pointer.

“Intensity and effort was there all night”, said Beth. “Proud of what they do to maintain the level of success that they maintain. Best game we’ve played all year and now’s the time to do it. You do it right now and move on into the regional tournament and hopefully take care of business and survive and advance.”

Langhi’s 20-point night led the Lady Marshals scoring. Reese Settle and Sunny Clark led Calloway with eight points each.

Both teams move on to the Region 1 Tournament with all four girls’ first round games being played on Saturday at the CFSB Center. They will know their opponents following the tournament draw on Wednesday morning at Marshall County High School.
