***UPDATE*** (February 3, 2022) – The collision that had the westbound lanes of I-24 blocked at mile marker 33 has been cleared and the roadway has been reopened.
Mayfield, KY. (February 3, 2022) – Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 1 has been responding to the current winter weather event. As of 4:00 p.m. CST, KSP Post 1 telecommunicators have answered 189 emergency phone calls and 391 non-emergency phone calls. KSP Post 1 Troopers and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers have responded to 4 injury collisions, 7 non-injury collisions, and checked on at least 15 stranded motorists.
Troopers are currently on scene of a non-injury collision involving a commercial motor vehicle on I-24 at the 33 mile marker westbound. Both westbound lanes are blocked and westbound traffic is being detoured at exit 40.
While interstates, parkways, and state highways are passable, they remain slick and hazardous. KSP continues to urge everyone to avoid travel if possible. If travel is necessary, please use goky.ky.gov to check traffic updates before you get on the road. It is essential to reduce speeds and increase following distance in the current conditions.
As precipitation is expected to continue through the overnight hours, we expect roadway conditions to continue to decline. As temperatures continue to drop, any roadways that may appear clear are likely to develop black ice.
KSP has also received several reports of fallen trees across roadways due to ice buildup on the trees, adding to the hazardous conditions. This is an increasing concern as ice continues to build on trees and powerlines.
