On January 14th, 2022 at 10:37 a.m. the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 10 mile marker of westbound Interstate 24 regarding a single-vehicle collision. It was reported a vehicle had driven off the interstate into a creek and the driver was trapped inside.

An employee of Jason’s Collision Center (Paducah) was traveling in the area and observed the collision. Michael Fiers, 35 years-old of Paducah, quickly exited his truck and rushed to the drivers aid. Fiers entered the water and was able to pull the driver to safety as emergency personnel were arriving on scene.

The operator of the vehicle, Kenneth Smith, 59 years-old of Paducah, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Reidland-Farley Fire Department, Mercy Regional Ambulance, McCracken County Office of Emergency Management, Jason’s Collison Center and Stinnett’s Towing.

The outcome of this collision could have been drastically different had it not been for the quick thinking and actions of Mr. Fiers. We here at the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office would like to publicly recognize Mr. Fiers on a job well done.

Thank you,

Lieutenant Ryan Willcutt
