KHESLC provides student loan relief to borrowers in Marshall County

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 17, 2021) — Kentucky’s only nonprofit state-based student loan agency is providing relief to borrowers in Marshall County in the wake of the recent tornado.

The Kentucky Higher Education Student Loan Corporation (KHESLC) is automatically granting forbearances to borrowers who are repaying federal student loans and private Advantage Education Loans serviced by the agency.

The forbearances mean that borrowers won’t have to make loan payments between Dec. 10 and March 9. Interest will accrue while the loans are in forbearance, but the interest will not be added to the loan principal. When people resume paying their loans in March, payments will first go toward fees and interest, then toward the principal.

Borrowers who don’t want their loans to go into forbearance should call KHESLC at 1-800- 693-8220.

The Kentucky General Assembly created KHESLC in 1978 as an independent public agency to provide low-cost student loans to students and parents. It is a sister agency to the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority, the state agency that administers the Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES) and other state student aid programs.
