Coming into Tuesday’s district contest, one team would suffer their first loss of the season and at the end of the night, it was Murray who handed the Marshals their first loss, also marking the third straight loss to the Tigers. The Marshals won both of last season’s regular season games before falling to Murray in both the 4th District and Region 1 Tournament championship games.
The Marshals led 9-8 at the end of the first quarter before things quickly went downhill from there, finishing with a 29.4 field goal percentage in the game. They were steady at the free throw line, hitting 10-of-12 attempts.
Murray senior Trey Boggess gave them their first lead at 10-9 with his second quarter opening field goal and they would go on to out-score the Marshals 14-1 to lead 22-10 at halftime.
Quinn Smith and Kole Sedlock scored the first four points of the second half for the Marshals, cutting Murray’s double-digit lead down to seven points but they would trail 28-18 going into the fourth.
Murray out-scored the Marshals 18-13 in the fourth quarter, getting two threes from sophomore Drew May, but it was junior Grant Whittaker who led the way for the Tigers with 17 points in the 15-point win.
Wade Moore led the Marshals’ scoring with 13 points, going 5-of-6 at the free throw line.
Last Friday, the Marshals trailed Graves County 46-45 with 16.2 seconds left in the game before it was suspended due to tornado warnings. The game was tied 9-9 at the end of the first quarter and the Marshals led 21-17 at halftime. They trailed by one point at 32-31 at the end of the third quarter.
Friday’s game against McCracken County has been cancelled. They will play Taylor County on Dec. 28 in the Campbellsville Hill School Holiday Classic.
