Trinity powers past Marshals in Class 6A playoff game

Marshall County football wrapped up their 2021 season with a 76-0 loss to Trinity (Louisville) in the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs. The Marshals finish 3-8 while the Shamrocks (4-7), move on to play Ballard (8-3) next Friday. Ballard beat Eastern 44-0 on Friday to advance to the round of 16.

As per KHSAA alignment rules, the fifth place team in District 1 Class 6A (Marshall County) plays in the first round against an opponent in District 5 which is made up of three teams (Trinity, Ballard, Eastern).

Trinity scored early and often to lead 35-0 at the end of the first quarter. The first of six touchdowns in the quarter started on a tipped Marshall County punt that set Trinity up at the Marshals 31 yard line and they scored on a one yard run by senior Armon Tucker.

Colin Brasher returned a Marshals punt 50 yards to score their second touchdown. An 11-yard pass from senior quarterback Brady Willis to Avery Sinnott made it a 21-0 game. A Trinity interception resulted in a 12 yard touchdown reception by Noah Meyers and the final touchdown of the first quarter came on short field again from the 20, scoring from the nine yard line.

The Bruins scored twice in the second quarter, the first a 19 yard run by Tucker and the second on a five yard run by Lucas Sasser and the well-oiled Trinity machine led 49-0 at halftime.

The Marshals second half kick off was returned 96 yards by Stephen Mack to give the Bruins a 56-0 lead. They scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter and one in the fourth. The Marshals night and season ended at the three yard line on a pass from Quinn Smith to Carter Beliles.

Trinity’s 255 yards of total offense came mostly on the ground with 162 yards on 16 rush attempts spread out among seven players. Tucker led the way with 46 yards on five carries. Willis was 6-of-7 in passing for 63 yards and Jackson Hepner 2-of-2 for 30 yards. The two connected with seven different receivers led by Boyd with two receptions for 22 yards.

The Marshals, unofficially, had 93 yards of offense – 13 in rushing and 80 in passing yards.
