After suspending their Season in 2020, Marshall County 4-H Sharp Shooters had a a modified shooting sports season for Summer 2021. Working with two Shotgun Coaches (Lee Cope and Mike Derkacy) and one Archery Coach (Jody Jones), membership this season was limited to just returning Trap or Archery 4-Hers and their siblings. There was a total of 11 youth enrolled for Season 2021 with seven remaining active after mid-season.
Six participated in the 2021 State 4-H Shoot on September 11th and 12th. Four competed in Archery Bowhunter and Target Compound. Hoyt Jones brought home 1st Place in Archery Target 9-11. The other 4-Hers in Archery were Mallory Beliles, Lainee Siegle, and Boyd Jones. Hoyt and Boyd placed 6th and 7th in Archery Bowhunter 9-11 and Boyd was in 5th place in Archery Target 9-11. Lainee and Mallory also had good scores with Lainee being 8th in Archery Target 12-14.
Two 4-Hers (Travis Jameson and Hunter Frizzell) competed in Shotgun and did quite well. Hunter actually placed 7th in the State in Shotgun Division 2 Ages 9-11. He shot 41 out of 50 clays. Travis did quite good as well in a very crowded Shotgun Division 2 Ages 12-14 lineup.
The sportsmanship and respect shown by all the Marshall County 4-Hers and families during some difficult times were very commendable.
With the modified season, the 4-H Sharp Shooters did not conduct the annual fundraising shoots like in 2019 and before. Lena Mallory, Marshall County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development, worked with the Coaches and families to secure donations totaling $750 to help cover costs for Season 2021 beyond those covered by membership dues. A new building was also donated to store the archery equipment at Calvert City Gun Club.
Marshall County 4-H Sharp Shooters plan to kick off Season 2022 in late February/early March. Memberships will be limited due to fewer coaches in shotgun, pistol, rifle/BB, and archery available at this time. Once details for an “all call” meeting are known, it will be announced via social media and through the schools.
