Marshall County hosted the Class 3A Region 1 Championship on Wednesday and at the end of a drizzly then sunny day of track and field, the Lady Marshals took the win and the Marshals finished runner-up. Combined, the two squads had automatic state qualifiers in 15 events for the KHSAA State Track and Field Championships in Lexington on June 12.
The Marshall County girls’ team took the win with 141 points, Henderson County was second with 133 points and Daviess County third with 95 points. The Owensboro boys won the region title with 122 points followed by Marshall County in second with 97 and McCracken County third with 82 points.
Sophie Galloway punched her ticket to state with four first place finishes in the 200 meters, 100 meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump. The Tennessee commit broke her own regional meet records set in 2019 in two events. Her time of 14.33 in the 100 meter hurdles set a new mark, breaking the old time of 14.49 and in the long jump she set a new record of 19-00.50 which broke the old record of 18-07. Galloway still holds the regional meet record in the triple jump set in 2019.
Also getting the automatic spot in the state meet, the girls 4 x 100 relay and the 4 x 200 relay – both finishing in first place – with members Laney Evans, Charley Pursley, Layne Pea and Jordyn Reed. Presleigh Jennings is the region champion in the high jump and Tori McCracken finished second – both cleared 5-00 and will compete at the state meet. Maci Brown also earned an automatic trip to state with a second place finish in discus.
Cade Flatt secured his trip back to the state meet with two first place finishes in the 400 and 800 meters as well as a second place finish with the 4 x 400 relay team that also includes Isaiah Kirby, Will Davis and Preston Lamb. Behind Flatt in the 400 meters, Will Davis finished second to earn the spot at state. Also headed to state, Chase Thompson placed second in shot and Ben Fiser first in discus.
After region results are posted across the state, following the automatic qualifiers, more Marshall County track and field athletes may qualify for the state meet.
