Two home runs by Edwards leads Lady Marshals over Caldwell County

Kinley Edwards hit back to back two-run homers in the third and fourth innings in the Lady Marshals 12-1 win at Caldwell County on Monday.

The Lady Marshals are 19-10 heading into their final seven games of the regular season. In two games on Saturday they beat Henderson County 5-1 then lost to current number one ranked South Warren 5-3 and Monday beat Caldwell County 12-1.

Starting off with Henderson County, a team the Lady Marshals lost 10-4 to on April 30, they opened the game on a 2-0 lead after the first inning – Charley Pursley stole home and a sacrifice RBI by Kinley Edwards.

The 2-0 lead held until the top of the fourth when Henderson scored their lone run of the game on a solo home run hit by Julianna Hibbs.

The lead was 3-1 after four innings, the run scoring on a single by Gabbi Lovett. The final two runs came in the bottom of the sixth on a bunt by Layne Pea that scored McKenzie Elkins and RBI by Pursley on a ground out.

Gracelyn Darnall picked up the win, allowing one run and seven hits over seven innings.

Presley Jezik had three hits in four plate appearances for the Lady Marshals in Saturday’s 5-3 loss to South Warren.

A 2-1 lead for the Lady Marshals held until the top of the sixth inning on Saturday against top ranked South Warren before the Lady Spartans tied the game in the top of the sixth which sent it into an extra inning. A double by Katie Walker and singles by Hope White and Emily Reynolds gave the Lady Spartans a 5-2 lead in the top of the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth, Presley Jezik led off with a single and scored on a double by McKenzie Elkins. Riley Piercefield reached on a error that loaded up the bases on no outs. Jezik was thrown out at home plate and Henderson wrapped up the 5-3 win on a double play.

Eight good innings from the pitchers on both sides – Layla Ogden got the win for the Lady Spartans, allowing three runs, 12 hits and struck out three. Gracelyn Darnall allowed 13 hits, five runs and struck out one.

Gracelyn Darnall earned two wins from the circle over three games. In their 5-1 win over Henderson County, the freshman allowed one run and seven hits and in the 12-1 win over Caldwell County, struck out two while allowing five hits and one run.

The Lady Marshals scored 12 runs on 13 hits over six innings in Monday’s 12-1 win over Caldwell County. Senior Kinley Edwards was big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs and back to back  two-run home runs in the third and fourth innings.

Gracelyn Darnall picked up another win over four innings, allowing five hits, one run and struck out one. Tia Thorpe pitched in relief, allowing two hits with one strike out.

Charley Pursley was 2-for-4 with a triple, Presley Jezik 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Sarenna Tomassi 3-for-4 with an RBI and Riley Piercefield hit a two run homer in the top of the fifth.
