Marshall County swimmers set new team records at state meet

Four members of the Marshall County swim team competed in the KHSAA State Swimming and Diving Championships held at Union College – Mary Grace Thompson, Anne-Marie Atkins, Macey Weaver and Delaney Miller. The state competition was held at four different regional locations and times combined for overall state results.

In individual events, Thompson competed in the 50 freestyle and Miller in the 100 butterfly. All four made up the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams that also qualified for the state meet.

Thompson finished fifth at Union College and posted the 26th fastest time overall in the state with a time of 25.70, a .6 second off her old record of 26.38. She was an automatic qualifier for state after her second place finish April 10th in regionals with a time of 26.53.

Miller set another team record in the 100 butterfly, dropping 2.30 seconds to finish ninth and 33rd overall in the state with a time of 1:02.30. Another automatic qualifier, Miller placed second in the regional meet with a time of 1:04.36.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Miller, Atkins, Weaver and Thompson set a new team record with a time of 1:46.10 but suffered a disqualification in the event. They dropped five seconds from their previous best of 1:51.96 set with their third place finish in regionals and broke the old record by four seconds.

In the 400 freestyle relay, the foursome broke their old team record by 14 seconds to finish sixth and 27th overall in the state with a time of 3:54.59. The relay placed third at regionals in 4:10.07 to advance to state.

Thompson led the relay off with another team record with a record-breaking time of 55.89 in her 100 yard leg. Miller and Weaver set records in their 100 yard segments.
