Marshals off to 3-0 start, only one run allowed in first three games

Marshall County Baseball is off to a 3-0 start this season, out-scoring their first three opponents 27-1. Shutouts over Scott County 10-0 and Marion County 13-0 were followed by a 4-1 win over Todd County Central.

Against Scott County in the season opener, senior Evan Oakley earned the win over six innings of work, allowing just one hit and striking out six. Oakley also led at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Oakley opened the scoring for the Marshals in the bottom of the first inning with a 2-run single. The lead was 5-0 after the bottom of the second and they added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a single by sophomore Ethan Landis.

Scott County errors brought in two more runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 9-1 lead and the final run came in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Oakley.

The Marshals went 2-0 in games at Allen County-Scottsville on Friday. The first a 10 hit 13-0 shut out over Marion County in four and a half innings.

Sophomore Chase Hayden was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Conner Mannon, a junior, went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs and senior Griffin Darnall was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Leading 3-0, a 10-run bottom of the third put the game away starting with Hayden’s 2-run homer, with runs scoring on bases loaded walks, errors, a wild pitch, steal of home plate by Parker Gibbs and Hayden at the plate again with a double.

Senior Clay Hale earned the win over five innings, allowing three hits with seven strike outs.

In their second game at Allen County-Scottsville against Todd County Central, the Marshals 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a double by Brady Ives held until the bottom of the fourth when three more runs came in for a 4-0 lead. Those runs were scored on a single by junior Kalan Whiteside and Mannon reaching on a ground ball error that scored two runs.

Allen County-Scottsville got on the board in the top of the sixth on a single by junior Tanner Farmer to avoid the shutout.

Oakley struck out 16 batters, allowing three hits and one run in the win.

Up next, the Marshals will travel to Trigg County (2-2) for a 5:30 game on Monday.
