Marshall County teams take first in Invitational of the South

DRAFFENVILLE – Marshall County hosted the 25th Annual Invitational of the South on Friday and Saturday. The event spanned two days in order host as many teams as possible and adhere to COVID protocols.

After results from the two days were combined, the girls and boys teams from Marshall County took first in the meet. Top three teams behind Marshall County on the girls side – second went to Henderson County and third to Calloway County. The Calloway County boys took second and McCracken County was third.

Top finishes for the girls’ team came from Kaylee Blackford with a first place finish in the 300 meter hurdles (53.63) and Tori McCracken in the high jump (5-00). Behind McCracken in the high jump, Presleigh Jennings placed second – both clearing the 5-00 mark. Eighth grader Addison Lyles took first in the freshman 1600m (6:11.29) followed by Eden Sandlin, a seventh grader, in second place (6:13.37).  Two more second place finishes came from Alyssa McClain in shot put (33-07) and Maci Brown in discus (90-05).

Addison Lyles, an eighth grader, won the freshman 1600 meter run in 6:11.29.

The boys’ team placed first in 10 events. Will Davis took the win in the 200 meters (22.78) and placed second in both the 400m (49.85) and 800m (1:58.14) races. Cade Flatt doubled up on wins taking the 800m (1:54.36) and 400m races and set a new school record time of 48.59 in the 400m. Davis’ second place time of 49.85 in the 400m also broke the old mark.

Ethan McCarty crossed in first in the 3200m (9:55.60) and Ben Fiser recorded double firsts in field events shot (52-02) and discus (157-02). The Marshals dominated the relays with four firsts in the 4×100, 4×400 (freshman), 4×400 and 4×800. Kian Court placed second in the 300m hurdles (44.78), Nick Mighell second in long jump (19-09.50) and another second went to Chase Thompson in discus (49-06.50).

Special award winners from the meet:

Howard Reeves Distance Runner of the Meet Award: Dinah Winders, Henry County, Tenn.
Winders won the 1600 meters (5:19.13) and the 1300 meters (11:10.38)

Adriane Diamond-Travis Female Athlete of the Meet: Autumn Bell, Christian County
Bell won the 400 meters (1:04.07) and triple jump (31-09.00). She took second in the 200 meters (27.91)

Mike Brame Male Athlete of the Meet: Aaron Fennel, Calloway County
Fennel took first in the 100 meters (11.30), second in both the 200 meters (22.78) and third in the 400 meters (51.03).

Cade Flatt won the 400 meter race followed closely by Will Davis. Both broke the school record in the event – Flatt with a time of 48.59 and Davis with 49.85.

Ethan McCarty, in the 1500 meters on Saturday, took the win in the 3200 meter run. The sophomore finished with a time of 9:55.60.

Nick Mighell’s jump of 19-09.50 was good for second place in Saturday’s long jump event.
