Leo Heidorn was born February 22, 1924, the son of Leo Heidorn Sr. and Dora McClure Heidorn of Augusta, Indiana and raised by an aunt after the death of his mother. Basketball was his passion and honing his skills at Winslow Indiana High School prepared him for a scholarship at Indiana State College. Like many his age, he took a break from school to serve 38 months in WWII, serving in both European and Pacific theaters and eventually landed in Japan. He graduated in 1950 from Purdue University as a Civil Engineer. He married Vada “Sandy” Bunch, an RN from Tennessee, in 1954 and had two sons; Eric Trent Heidorn, wife Melody, son Sam; and Steve Heidorn, wife Joan, son Alex, daughter Anna.
Leo and his wife were active in the Calvert City community while Leo worked at a chemical plant. After 15 years in Calvert, Leo transitioned to engineering construction, moving every two to three years to supervise the building of chemical and power plants in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Hawaii, and Israel. Blooming where they were planted, he and Sandy spent their free time being active in the community and church, having dinner parties, and sightseeing. After retiring in Florida for several years, he and Sandy were lured to Bartlesville, Oklahoma to be active grandparents. Regardless of where he lived, he saw a life of service as a life well and fully lived.
Leo died December 25, 2020 and was preceded in death by his parents, siblings (Leland Heidorn and Joan Buckley), and a granddaughter (Amber).
