Elouise Hicks, 103

Mrs. Elouise Tolar Hicks, age 103 passed away Saturday November 28, 2020 to be with her Lord and Savior in Heaven. She was Born 1917 in Mayfield, KY. She was a graduate of Mayfield High School in 1936.

She was preceded in death by her husband Amos Tracy Hicks, Jr.; parents, Mildred Wright Tolar and Charles K. Tolar; sister, Mildred Rosalyn Tolar (Hal) Gibson; two brothers, Charles K. Tolar, Jr. and William Thomas Tolar.

She is survived by her daughter, Janice Hicks Sweatt of Mayfield; one grandson, Samuel Tracy (Jenny) Sweatt of Springfield, VA; two great-grandchildren, Rachel and Zachary; and many nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for 95 years. Where her grandfather H.C. Wright was the the contractor that built it in 1919 with help from uncle Ralph Wright. She loved her church participating as chairman of fellowship Circle, secretary of Wesley Sunday School Class, helped with the Stewards Supper, bible school, and sung in the choir. Elouise was known for her coconut pie. Her parents owned Tolar’s Grocery where many form town and Curlee Traded. She attended William Woods College in Fulton, MO, but came home to marry A.T. Hicks the love of her life. They were voted the girl and boy most in love at Mayfield High School. Mrs. Hicks was the co-owner of Hick’s Drive In from 1953-1970 where many teenagers hung out. It gave  jobs and responsibility to young people. Elouise loved eating watermelon and having swimming parties at KY Lake after hours. For 5 years she was co-owner of Dinner Bell Restaurant. She was a member of Campfire Girls and also worked at Lochridge and Ridgeway Furniture Store as well as Roman Ceramics, Also sat with Children and elderly. Mrs. Hicks was a seamstress making evening dresses for her daughter who was in the Miss Memphis Pageant. In her young life she attended Unique Theatre in Mayfield. You could see her and other girls (her crowd) going to the Princess, Legions Theatre often, and seen at all the dances. In 1988 the movie “In Country ” Marie rebuilt Hick’s Drive In as a replica. Elouise’s favorite movie was “Gone With The Wind” as she said she seen more than Lon Carter Barton. She loved music and took piano lessons as well as played the flute in the Mayfield High School Orchestra. Elouise loved and raised many animals until she was 90 years old. Visited the Grand Canyon five times, as well as attended the New York and Seattle World Fairs. Elouise flew to Europe with her grandson and future daughter in law when she was 85 years old. Was a Paducah Flood of 1937 survivor as well as the Ice Flood.

A private graveside service is scheduled for Wednesday December 2, 2020 at the Maplewood Cemetery in Mayfield, KY. Rev. Joey Reed will officiate. Jeff Hicks, Andrew Gibson, Justin Myers, and Sonny Gibson will serve as pallbearers.
