Thirteen top 10’s for Marshall County swimmers in Saturday’s regionals

KHSAA Region One Swimming Championships were held Friday and Saturday at Hopkinsville High School. Swimmers were vying for the top two spots in each event for the automatic qualification to the KHSAA State Championships at the University of Louisville in a couple of weeks. After the top two automatic qualifiers from each region, the next 22 fastest times in each event from across the state will round out the state entries.

Preliminaries in all events were held on Friday with the top 16 in each event advancing to Saturday’s finals.

Marshall County swimmers placed 13 in the top 10 at Saturday’s finals. The top finish for the girl’s team came in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. They finished fifth in 1:53.46 with team members Sofia Bayer, Delaney Miller, Anne-Marie Atkins and Mary Grace Thompson. Delaney Miller recorded the top individual finish, placing sixth in the 100 Yard Butterfly in 1:10.39 and Sofia Bayer placed seventh in the 100 Yard Breaststroke in 1:23.33.

The top finish for the boy’s team came in the 200 Yard Individual Medley Relay, finishing fourth in 2:03.04 with members Josh Rushing, Andrew Wilson, Nikalai Bryan and Garrett Parker. Top individual results came from Nikalai Bryan with an eighth place finish in the 100 Yard Butterfly (1:10.56) and Garret Parker, also finishing eighth in the 100 Yard Freestyle (1:01.54).

Hopkinsville won the Region One team title on the girl’s side, McCracken County finished second and Murray third among 13 teams. Marshall County finished seventh. Madisonville-North Hopkins took the boys win followed by McCracken County and Murray. Marshall County placed seventh in the field of 12 teams.

Four Region One meet records fell Saturday, all in relay events. Murray’s boys set a new record in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, breaking the old record set by Madisonville-North Hopkins in 2019. Paducah Tilghman girls broke the 2018 record, also held by Tilghman, in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. Hopkinsville girls set a new 200 Yard Freestyle Relay record, breaking the old record set in 2016 by Madisonville-North Hopkins and Tilghman girls broke their own 200 Yard Freestyle Relay record from 2018.
