Marshals end Eagles Nest drought in 56-51 win

Jay Nimmo getting the Marshals offensive possession set up, got them on the board in the first quarter with two straight threes on his way to nine points in the 56-51 win over Graves County.

A bit of a sluggish start for the Marshals met with a fired up Graves County team Friday at the Eagles Nest, but at the final buzzer, they pulled out a 56-51 win to earn the regular season sweep after beating the Eagles (8-17) at home 75-39 on Jan. 17. It was the first win at Graves County for the Marshals (16-9) in nine years and combined with the Lady Marshals win, the first double-header sweep at the Eagles Nest going back 12 seasons.

Seth Thomas had a big night for the Eagles with 24 points and scored the first two baskets after the opening tip for an early 4-0 lead. Jay Nimmo was dialed in from beyond the arc to score the first six for the Marshals. Trailing 8-6, Thomas went on a solo 7-0 run to put the Eagles on top 13-8 before threes from Tyler Powell and  Zion Harmon ended the first quarter on a 14-13 lead.

Tyler Powell threads between Graves County defenders Kade Babb (50) and John Brown (33) in the first half against Graves County. Powell finished with eight points in the Marshals first win at the Eagles Nest in nine years.

Harmon dropped in 10 of the Marshals 15 second quarter points on his way to a 25-point night, sandwiched between Powell’s field goal to open the quarter and Nimmo’s 3-pointer that ended it on a 29-27 halftime lead. The Eagles largest lead of the quarter of three points followed a 7-0 run while the Marshals largest lead of the quarter was four.

The Eagles tied the game at 29 to open the second half before Tyler Stokes scored his first points of the game to put the Marshals back on top. Out-scoring the Eagles by one point in the third to lead 46-43, the quarter for the Marshals was high lighted by two straight baskets battling under the goal by Bryce Flatt and a nice lob from Harmon to Stokes for the slam.

The Marshals six-point lead in the fourth quarter at 51-45 slimmed to two points on free throws from Kade Babb and a basket by Thomas. Harmon put the Marshals back up by four and with 14.8 left on the clock and Thomas made it a two-point game at 53-51. Two fouls on Powell in the closing seconds resulted in three of four at the free throw line to finish out the win by five.

The Marshals will take their nine game win streak into a big week of district games starting with Murray at home on Feb. 11 and at Calloway County Feb. 14.
