Lady Marshals end Lady Eagles 14-game win streak

The last time Graves County lost was on Dec. 21 and since then, they have won 14 straight including a 43-40 win over Marshall County on Jan. 17. The Lady Marshals ended that streak Friday at the Eagles Nest with a 43-35 win over the Lady Eagles. It is the seventh straight win for the Lady Marshals who improve to 17-8, while Graves County, the #22 ranked team in the state is 19-4.

A good start for the Lady Eagles with baskets from Avery Myatt and a two and three pointer from Nealey Jackson put them up 7-0 before Jada Driver got the Lady Marshals on the board with a three. A bucket from Raychel Mathis was the start of an 8-0 run for Graves County and a 15-3 lead. The Lady Marshals scored the next six points, four from Cayson Conner and the final basket of the first quarter by Layne Pea to trail 15-9.

Driver trimmed the Graves County lead to three points with a three to open the second quarter scoring. The Lady Marshals held Graves County to one field goal in the quarter, a three from Jackson, and took their first lead of the game on a buzzer-beater by Langhi to lead 19-18 at halftime.

Marshall County took their largest lead of the game in the third quarter at 29-20 before Mathis, who was held to five points in the game, hit two straight for Graves County to cut the lead down to five to end the third quarter.

A three by Chloe Dawson cut Marshall County’s lead to two to open the fourth quarter but they extended it back out to seven points at 35-28 behind two free throws from Langhi, a basket by Conner and a basket by Driver who was fouled and made the free throw. Jackson, who led Graves County with 11 points, dropped in a three to cut the lead down to four and it was a two-point game on a field goal by Bailey Wilson.

With 2:54 remaining, Langhi sank two free throws, Jezik scored and Langhi hit two more at the line to lead 41-33 with 1:39 left. Mathis scored the final basket for Graves County and the Lady Marshals sealed the win with a long pass from Langhi to a wide-open Conner.

Langhi’s 13 points led the scoring for Marshall County, Driver had 10 and Conner finished with eight.
