Marshals season ends in loss to Trinity

Marshall County’s 2019 season came to an end Friday night in Louisville when they lost 63-0 to Trinity. Trinity moves on to the Class 6A round of 16 teams and will play Ballard, a 44-6 winner over Eastern on Friday.

Trinity beat Ballard 50-0 in last season’s elite eight round of the state playoffs before falling in the final four to Male, 27-20. In 2017, Trinity beat St. Xavier 38-21 to win the Class 6A state title, the second straight for the Shamrocks after defeating Lafayette 56-21 in the 2016 title game. They have won the state championship 25 times in program history.

Trinity put up 35 points in the first quarter and another 14 in the second quarter to lead 49-0 at halftime. With a running clock that began in the second quarter, Trinity quickly put the game away, scoring a touchdown in the third quarter and one in the fourth for the 63-0 win.

With a roster of 115 players, freshman through seniors, Trinity has a large talent pool to choose from, including sophomore running back Armon Tucker and senior wide receiver Ryan Miller, also top track and field athletes for Trinity – both scoring two touchdowns a piece against the Marshals Friday. Junior quarterback Nathan McElroy has helped lead Trinity to a #3 ranking in the state and a 9-2 record. Trinity combined in rushing and passing for just under 400 yards.

Thirteen seniors played their final game for the orange and blue – Ty Buckmeier, Devon Evan, Bryce Flatt, Zac Jones, Dalton Keeling, Dylan Rayburn, Dawson Smothers, Cody Sorrells, Clay Sutton, Conner Washburn, Matthew Wooten, Luke Wyatt and Teddy Wynn.
