City of Wickliffe awarded $52,915 in discretionary funds for critical pavement improvements

PADUCAH, Ky. (Oct. 24, 2019) – A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) official was joined by local and county officials at Wickliffe City Hall this morning to announce $52,915 in discretionary funds for street resurfacing in Wickliffe. Resurfacing repairs address existing surface cracks, potholes, raveling, and base failures. The investment supports Governor Matt Bevin’s commitment to prioritize transportation infrastructure projects and increase economic opportunity in communities across the Commonwealth.
“The Bevin Administration continues to focus on maintaining important infrastructure at both the state and local level to support job creation and retention, as well as enhancing safety,” said KYTC Secretary Greg Thomas. “This discretionary award builds upon existing transportation investments and allows the Cabinet to collaborate with local government agencies to identify projects that will have a significant impact on our infrastructure and in our communities.”
The award funds resurfacing along sections of Broadway, South Seventh Street, Cumberland Street, and North Seventh Street.
In the application for discretionary funding, Wickliffe Mayor David Phillips noted that the award will allow improvements to some of the city’s most heavily-traveled streets.
“We would like to thank Governor Bevin and Transportation Secretary Greg Thomas for the much-needed money for improving the streets here in Wickliffe,” said Mayor Phillips. “A huge thanks for remembering our small towns.”
According to the mayor, resurfacing along streets submitted for the project will benefit 28 homes, two businesses and almost all of the city’s nearly 700 residents.
Projects submitted to the Department of Rural and Municipal Aid for discretionary funding consideration are evaluated by the KYTC district engineering staff to assess the condition of roads and streets to determine the most critical needs based on factors such as safety, economic impact, and traffic volume.
“This award will benefit all citizens of Wickliffe,” said Sen. Danny Carroll. “Nothing is more essential than maintaining streets that are safe for everyone to travel.”
Rep. Steven Rudy also expressed his appreciation for the discretionary award to aid with critical street repairs.
“This is very good news for Wickliffe,” said Rep. Rudy. “I am pleased to see the Governor and Transportation Cabinet make this community a priority. Without a doubt, our roads connect us to the places that mean something to our quality of life.  By resurfacing these roads, we’re providing smoother, safer trips to school, work, home, and family. This is what state government should be doing.”
The City of Wickliffe is responsible for administering the work, and KYTC will reimburse the city for the projects.
Work will address :

  • Broadway (City Street 1003) – paving of 0.26 miles
  • South 7th (City Street 1008) – paving of 0.129 miles
  • Cumberland Street (City Street 1026) – paving of 0.069 miles
  • North 7th Street (City Street 1009) – paving of 0.030 miles
