The Marshals traveled to Lexington to participate in the Kentucky Cup Invitational tournament on Wednesday at University of Kentucky Wildcat course (par 71). The field of 23 teams playing would be the strongest teams in the state competing for the top four spots which will advance to Thursday’s match play. Weather conditions at the beginning of the tournament were rainy but gave way to cloudy, overcast skies for most of the day.
The Marshals shot a team score of 325 and placed 19th. Tyler Powell continued his strong consistent play and shot an even par 71. Camdyn McLeod also continued to play consistently in the 70’s with a round of 78 (7 over par).
The top four teams advancing to match play on day 2 are: Lexington Christian Academy #1, Taylor Co, Trinity and St. Xavier. Cooper Parks of Taylor Co shot a 65 (6 under par) for medalist honors on day 1.
“Overall it was a great experience for our players to play against this competition”, Head Coach Keith Bell said. “It helps to show them what part of their golf game do they need to work on to improve as a player. This tournament had the feel of the season ending state tournament which is where we want to be in October.”
Bell said Powell finished three competitive tournaments in 2 over par which is impressive. I hope that he can continue to maintain this level of play throughout the season. McLeod continues to improve and play more consistently than last year and the team looks forward to having Nimmo back in their next tournament.
“Overall, the three day trip playing in a quality tournament each day was great experience for the players”, Bell said. “This group of players will continue to work hard as a team and individually in order to return back to the state tournament.”
The Marshals return to action Saturday hoping to defend their title at the Dawson Springs Invitational at Pennyrile State Park Golf Course.
