Lady Marshals, Marshals play in Gator Invitational

The Lady Marshals celebrate their win at the Gator Invitational in Bowling Green.

The Lady Marshals played at the Lady Gator Invitational also at Bowling Green Country Club. With a team score of 309 they picked up a win in the 18 team field. Hallie Riley’s 70 was low for the Lady Marshals. Other scores Savannah Howell 74, Megan Hertter 82, Kenley Luksic 83 and Sydney Phillips 94.

The Marshals also teed it up in the Gator Invitational and according to Head Coach Keith Bell, the team arrived with confidence having just won the previous day in Owensboro. In Bowling Green, they would face some of the top high school teams in the state of Kentucky.

The team had to deal with some adversity since on Monday night, Jay Nimmo, #1 player for the Marshals received a phone call and invite to play in the Jr PGA Championship in Louisville at Valhalla golf course. Bell said was bitter sweet to not have him play with the team on Tuesday and Wednesday but a great accomplishment Jay’s part to get the invite to play in the tournament.

Trey Wall, a NMMS 8th grader was called upon to play in the #5 spot for the team and his first high school tournament.

The team shot 326 which earned them a 11th place finish. Tyler Powell had another solid round of golf shooting a one over par 73 for the day. Camdyn McLeod also had a good round shooting 76 (4 over par).

Lexington Christian Academy won with an impressive 282 led by last year’s state tournament champion Jansen Preston’s 64. Powell had the low round of the day for the Marshals with a 73, followed by Camdyn McLeod 76, Drake Butler 84, Trey Wall 93 and Nathan Clark 94.

“I’m really proud of Tyler for stepping up and having another good round of golf”, Bell said. “Camdyn played really well the whole tournament until the last hole but still ended with a good score. Drake Butler showed improvement from the tournament in Owensboro which should help his confidence. Trey showed a lot of grit in his first official high school tournament, competing against players that were 3 to 5 years older than him could be intimating but he never backed down.”

Bell said the tournament always has great competition which he wanted the players to be exposed to in order to prepare for post season play.

The boys travel to the UK Club Wildcat Course in Lexington for the UK Cup today. The Lady Marshals return to Bowling Green on Thursday for the South Warren tournament at Crosswinds Golf Course.
