Winter weather mix hits area

Yellow daffodils in Briensburg weathered ice and snow Sunday as temperatures dropped throughout western Kentucky.

Despite signs of spring over the weekend with clocks moving forward and flowers blooming, icy winter weather blasted through the area Sunday night leaving slick roads and some spots of standing snow.

Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Department, said as of 7 a.m. Monday, crews in McCracken, Livingston, and Crittenden Counties are out plowing
and treating trouble spots.

“We have several other crews that are patrolling and prepared to treat potential trouble spots,” Todd said via email. “Crittenden County appears to have the heaviest accumulation with up to 2 inches of snow at some locations and brief periods of sleet from time to time. The wet snow is plowing quite well, but is making for hazardous driving conditions.”

Some area schools — including districts in Livingston and Crittenden counties — canceled classes Monday. Marshall County Schools were in session at normal time.

First responders stayed busy throughout the early morning following reports of vehicles off the road along the Purchase Parkway and in other parts of the county.
