
Friday’s 46-41 win over Calloway County gave the Marshals a sweep of the 4th District in a game that was a tale of two halves and fortunately for the Marshals, their second half play earned them the win.
The Lakers went to the free throw line seven times in the first half compared to zero for the Marshals. Quite the reverse in the second half the with the Marshals going 9/13 at the line and Calloway 2/3. An average 56% field goal percentage for the Lakers through the first three quarters dropped to 20% in the fourth quarter, which allowed the Marshals who shot 50% in the fourth to pull out the win.
Down 5-0 early, the Marshals scored two straight from Aaron Reed and Tyler Stokes, trailing by one point at 11-10 at the end of the quarter following two straight 3-pointers from Tyler Powell and Matt French.
Calloway County out-scored the Marshals 12-8 in the second quarter, getting five straight points from the free throw line from Cade Butler to lead 23-18 at halftime. Six of the Marshals eight points came from Skyler Smith with two threes and a basket by Reed.

The second half spark came from freshman Jay Nimmo, who scored all 10 of his team leading points in the half starting with a 3-pointer to cut the Lakers lead to three with 2:00 remaining in the third quarter. Two straight baskets by Kade Mize put the Lakers up by seven before Nimmo’s second three in the game cut it to 34-30. A three from Reed made it a one point game heading into the fourth quarter.
Almost three minutes into the fourth quarter, a basket from Powell gave the Marshals a 35-34 lead and they never trailed the remainder of the game. Stokes made it a five point game with two minutes left to play, stretched out to seven on free throw by Nimmo.
Jeremy Darnell, who led the Lakers with 13 points, dropped in two free throws with 1:29 left to cut the Marshals lead to five before Nimmo stepped to the line and sank a free throw followed by two more at the line from Powell for a 44-36 lead with 38.6 seconds to go. Darnell cut the Marshals lead to six with 30 seconds left, Powell and Nimmo combined for two more points at the line with a final basket coming on a 3-pointer by Mize to cut the Marshals winning margin to five.
Tonight, the Marshals will play St. Mary followed the Lady Marshals game against Henderson County then Sunday will play home against Crittenden County at 3:00.
