
Calloway County earned a district split with the Lady Marshals Friday at Calloway County with a 45-36 win. The two teams will meet again in a week from Monday in the first round of the district tournament with more on the line, a chance to extend the season into the Region I Tournament.
Charlee Settle led the Lady Lakers with 20 points in the win, scoring the first three of the game for an early 3-0 lead before the Lady Marshals finally got on the board at 3:30 in the first quarter on a basket by Kinley Edwards. Tera Colson scored the next three points for the Lady Marshals who trailed Calloway County 10-5 at the end of the quarter.
Colson opened the second quarter with a field goal followed by a free throw by Halle Langhi that cut the Lady Lakers lead to two points. Picking it up defensively in the quarter, the Lady Marshals earned a 10 second call for a turnover and followed it up with a basket by Cayson Conner that tied the game 10-10 prompting a Calloway County time out from Head Coach Valerie Waller.
Out of the time out, Conner gave the Lady Marshals their first lead of the game then scored her second straight basket to put them up by four points. Up 16-15 in the closing seconds of the half, Keeli Puckett’s basket beat the buzzer to give Calloway County a 17-16 lead at halftime.
Conner dropped in two free throws to start the second half that put the Lady Marshals back up by one, the story of the third quarter with four lead changes and a tie. The Lady Lakers took a 27-26 lead on a 3-pointer by Puckett, going on to lead 30-27 at the end of the quarter.
Presley Jezik and Whitnee Miller combined for the first four points of the fourth quarter to switch the lead back in the favor of the Lady Marshals. Settle scored the next six points for the Lady Lakers to take a 38-31 lead and finished out the game out-scoring the Lady Marshals 7-5, five points coming at the free throw line in the closing seconds of the game.
Three games are left in the regular season starting with tonight’s home game against Henderson County, Monday at home against Graves County and Tuesday at Madisonville North Hopkins.
