West Marshall and Palma-Briensburg volunteer fire department crews responded to a trash fire that reportedly got out of hand Wednesday and set fire to an excavator at a local livestock farm.
West Marshall Fire Chief Brian Andrus said crews responded about noon Wednesday, Dec. 13 to a farm on Phelps Road in Marshall County in response to the fire. Residents had been burning trash on the property, Andrus said, when the fire spread to a large pile of hay. Workers attempted to stop the fire by spreading it with an excavator, Andrus said, however flames then spread to the equipment.
Assistant Chief Doug Redden said in a message to Marshall County Daily that the fire caused the excavator’s tires to essentially explode, blowing pieces of rim more than 100 feet away and through the roof of a barn on site.
No injuries were reported. Andrus said crews remained on scene about an hour to extinguish the blaze.
