Lady Mustangs earn first ever win over Lady Marshals

Tera Colson led the Lady Marshals with 19 points in Friday’s game at McCracken County.

In their fifth year of consolidation, McCracken County Lady Mustangs won for the first time over the Marshall County Lady Marshals Friday, 49-45, behind 25 points from Sarah Adams.

Trailing 5-0 to start the game, the Lady Marshals scored the next 12 points to take a 12-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Seven points by Meagan Hayden in the second quarter pulled the Lady Mustangs to within two points at 14-12, then they tied the game 14 all on a basket by Adams that finished out a 7-0 run for McCracken County. A free throw by Tera Colson and baskets by Emily Bridges and Chloe Kerrick put the Lady Marshals back up 19-14. Colson scored the final seven points of the second quarter for a 26-17 Lady Marshals halftime lead.

An 11 point lead early in the third quarter quickly vanished behind five points from Hayden and four free throws by Adams to cut the Lady Marshals lead to 28-26, then tied 28 all on another basket by Adams that finished out an 11-0 McCracken County run.

A 3-pointer by Colson put the Lady Marshals back up by three and two free throws by Cayson Conner gave them a five point lead, one they would maintain at the end of the quarter by a score of 37-32.

Adams basket and free throw after being fouled pulled the Lady Mustangs to within one before two straight three’s from Colson put Marshall County back up again at 43-36. Baskets by Adams and Marlee Morehead cut the Lady Marshals lead to two before Lorin Powell scored to put Marshall County up by four. Adams cut it back to a one point lead following a basket and subsequent free throw with three minutes left on the clock.

Ashton Rudy tied the game at 45 all with a free throw, then took a two point lead on a basket by Adams. Rudy added another free throw for a three point lead with 23 seconds remaining. One more free throw by Hayden with 14 seconds left gave the Lady Mustangs the four point win after out-scoring the Lady Marshals 17-8 in the final quarter.

Lady Marshals Head Coach Martin Clapp thought his team was rattled a little against the zone and said the team needs to work on handling pressure. The loss evens their record to 2-2 and they will play their first district game next week on December 12th at Murray.

Colson led the Lady Marshals with 19 points, Conner and Powell had six a piece, four each by Kerrick, Edwards and Pea and two by Bridges.
