Benton Police arrest Tennessee man after high-speed chase

A Tennessee man is facing charges after police say he fled when officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

According to Benton Police Department, about 10:47 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, officers observed a white Dodge Charger traveling the wrong direction down a one-way stretch of Main Street in Benton. When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly fled, turning down East 6th Street before heading north on Poplar and west on 5th Street.

The driver allegedly drove at speeds more than 80 mph on west 5th Street and ran a stop light in front of Walmart before speeding west on Symsonia Highway, prompting police to call in assistance on the pursuit.

Police chased the vehicle out into Marshall County, near the intersection of Arant and Wadesboro roads before deputies with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department deployed spike strips and ended the pursuit.

The suspect allegedly admitted to using methamphetamine prior to the pursuit.

The driver, Michael A. Ring, 31, of Milan, Tenn., was arrested at the scene on suspicion of first-degree possession of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, first-degree criminal mischief, speeding over 26 mph, disregarding a traffic control device, first-degree fleeing and evading police, DUI second offense, reckless driving and driving on a DUI suspended license.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
