West Marshall Fire Department crews respond to a fatal house fire Sunday on Tom Lane Road in Marshall County.

A Marshall County man was killed over the weekend when his home on Tom Lane Road in Benton caught fire early Sunday morning.

According to Marshall County Deputy Coroner Curt Curtner, about 6 a.m. Sunday a passerby reported a home on fire at 1968 Tom Lane Road in Benton. West Marshall and Palma-Briensburg fire departments responded to the scene to extinguish the blaze and discovered a potential victim within the home.

The homeowner, Cecil Garland, 70, was pronounced dead at 9 a.m. at the scene. Garland’s wife, who also occupied the home, was traveling at the time of the fire.

The Kentucky Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze, but no foul play was suspected. Curtner said preliminary investigation indicated an electrical malfunction could have caused the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing.
