We had a report this morning that a Marshall County Resident was contacted on Facebook Messenger by who she thought was a friend. Everything showed that it was the friend. The ” friend ” then told her that the government was giving away grants to people. She went to the website that was forwarded to her by the “friend”. She said it looked like a government site. She gave this site all of her personally identifiable information but refused to give money.
This was a scam which could lead to identity theft and the criminals using her personal information for monetary gain. We have referred the victim to the Cyber Crime Division of the Kentucky Attorney Generals Office.
We would like to remind everyone, the government or no one else gives away money for nothing. If someone is trying to get your personal information, there is a reason and it probably not a good one. Please be mindful of scams by phone, e mail, or social media.
