DRAFFENVILLE – The Lady Marshals opened 2017 with a nice win over Webster County, out of Region 2, who are coached by former Marshall County boy’s assistant Brandon Fisher in his first year with the Lady Trogans.
Lady Marshals Head Coach Joseph Simmons happy with the win saying “Webster County is probably the best 5-10 team in the state, 7 of their 9 losses have been to top 20 teams.”

“We all know what kind of coach Coach Fisher is, he’s a hard-nosed coach and you can tell his players play like that as well. They play so hard and I didn’t feel like we came out of the gate with the same intensity. Luckily our defense was able to hold serve and keep us close enough.”
Tied 6-6 at the end of the first quarter in a low-scoring first half, the Lady Marshals out-scored the Lady Trogans 9-7 to lead 15-13 at halftime behind six first half points by Lorin Powell, five from Miyah Davis and four from Paige Henson.
Both teams found their offense in the second half with 10 of the Lady Marshals 14 third quarter points coming from Hannah Langhi who scored all of her 17 points in the game in the second half. Henson and Davis added baskets in the third quarter for a 29-23 Lady Marshal lead.
Webster County cut the Lady Marshal lead to 29-27 on free throws by Alyssa Payne and a basket by Kelsey Payne prompting a quick time out from Simmons. Langhi hit four straight free throws out of the time out to put the Lady Marshals back up by six.
Simmons, upset with a call on Langhi, was handed a technical that sent Karlie Keeney to the line who made both free throws for Webster County. A 3-pointer from Keeney cut the Lady Marshals lead to 33-32, free throws by Tera Colson put them back up by four but cut to two again on a basket from Jessica Winders, who led the Lady Trogans in the game with 12 points.
A basket by Henson stretched the lead back out to four before a three by Kelsey Payne cut it back to one with 40 seconds remaining. Henson was fouled with 21.6 left on the clock and made the first of her one and one at the line. Langhi picked up the rebound off of Henson’s second miss and quickly converted it for two points for a 40-37 lead. Langhi was fouled with 3.6 seconds to go, sealing the 41-37 win with her first free throw.
The Lady Marshals (12-3) will begin district play Friday in a double header at Calloway County (13-1). The Lady Lakers, who finished last season 9-21, have just one loss this season to Graves County.
