AURORA – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet would like to thank everyone who showed up for the Eggners Ferry Bridge Inaugural Hike today. About 20 participants braved cold temps and 15 mph winds to walk from Kenlake State Park at Aurora to the Fenton Access Area in Land Between The Lakes.
The trail is now open to the public. The opening had to await the arrival and installation of some additional railings.
The multi-use trail interconnects with trails in Land Between The Lakes. It will also connect with a trail across the New Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton, still under construction.
This would best be termed a “soft opening.” The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet anticipates holding a Grand Opening as a joint venture with regional and state tourism organizations sometime in March or April as warmer weather allows.
Opening of the trail provides an opportunity for a New Years Eve or New Years Day hike this weekend. There is parking with access to the new trail at Kenlake State Park and on the Land Between The Lakes side of Kentucky Lake.
Anyone who plans to walk the trail across the new bridge is advised to dress warmly. With 20 miles of open lake below the bridge and 20 miles of open lake above the bridge there is a good chance you’ll encounter some wind, particular as you cross the main arch of the bridge structure.
