
DRAFFENVILLE – The Lady Marshal Holiday Classic began Monday at Reed Conder Gymnasium that includes host Marshall County and seven other teams – Butler County, Casey County, Dyer County TN, Paducah Tilghman, Russellville, Shelby County and Shelbyville Central TN.
The Lady Marshals (6-2) took the floor in the 6:00 game against Casey County (8-1) from Region 12 following wins by Shelbyville Central, TN over Butler County 58-29 and Shelby County over Paducah Tilghman 63-25.
The Lady Marshals led 6-1 early in the first quarter and went on to take a 15-8 first quarter lead behind 10 points from Hannah Langhi. Casey County battled back to trail by just two points following five straight points from Sarah Harne. The Lady Marshals went on to out-score Casey County 12 to 2 to finish the first half leading 27-15 behind four points from Tera Colson, three a piece from Langhi and Paige Henson and a field goal by Lorin Powell.
Both teams scored nine points in the third quarter that ended with the Lady Marshals up 36-24. Miyah Davis scored the majority of her 15 points in the fourth quarter, going 8 of 9 from the free throw line in the game, finishing it off with the final three points on a basket and free throw in their 60-42 first round win.
“I felt like this would be the toughest first round game of the tournament”, Lady Marshals Head Coach Joseph Simmons said. Simmons said he was proud of his girls for grinding it out and playing to their strengths and didn’t settle for outside shots. “I thought our three bigs were very effective on the wing and in the paint.”
Langhi led with 25 points and pulled in 14 rebounds in the win, going 9/11 from the free throw line. The Lady Marshals shot almost 81% from the free throw line going 21/26. Casey County stayed in the game from three point range scoring 18 points to the Lady Marshals 3.
The Lady Marshals advance to play Dyer County, TN who beat Russellville 73-24. That game will be played on Tuesday at 4:00. Tuesday’s games began at 11:00 am with Butler County playing Paducah Tilghman and Casey County playing Russellville at 12:30 in the consolation bracket. In the winner’s bracket, Shelbyville Central will play Shelby County at 2:30 followed by Marshall County vs. Dyer County.
