Lady Marshals fall to Murray in district opener

DRAFFENVILLE – The defending Region 1 Champion Murray High Lady Tigers proved they are up to that task again this season with their 65-38 win over the Lady Marshals Tuesday. Under the Murray pressure, the Lady Marshals struggled with turnovers with 20 in the game that the Lady Tigers converted into 28 points.

Leading from the start, Murray took an early 12-4 lead behind threes from Parker Greer and Brittany Lawson prompting Lady Marshals Head Coach Joseph Simmons to call a time out. Lorin Powell dropped in two straight baskets to cut Murray’s lead to four, but the Lady Tigers took advantage of turnovers to stretch their lead out to 20-8 and led 20-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Marshals cut the Murray lead to seven at halftime, starting the second quarter on a three by Miyah Davis who had eight of their 17 second quarter points, Powell added four and Hannah Langhi and Paige Henson each with two and Lexee Miller with one.

Murray out-scored the Lady Marshals 22-12 in the second half, led by Macey Turley with 12 second half points. The Lady Marshals struggled from the floor hitting just 3 of 21 in the half, out-rebounding the Lady Tigers but losing the ball on turnovers and steals that led to a 27 point loss with the game ending on a steal and lay-in at the buzzer by Elizabeth Curtis.

The Lady Marshals (5-2) will play at Massac County on Friday then host the Lady Marshal Holiday Classic on Monday and Tuesday.
