Marshals beat Massac 64-45 in first of two Hoopfest games

DRAFFENVILLE – In game two of the Hoopfest, the Marshals completed the double-header against Massac County earning a 64-45 win with four players in double figures led by Dylan Walters with 17 points, Aaron Reed 16 points, Houston Harvey 14 and Matthew French with 10.

Harvey put the first points on the board for the Marshals hitting three straight free throws after a foul in the process of a 3-pointer. Massac County took a 7-6 lead on a steal and lay-in by Darian Roundtree, tied up on a free throw by Walters and ending the quarter with a 9-7 lead on a Massac basket by Cade Burgess at the buzzer.

A free throw by Skyler Smith and 3-pointer by Harvey put the Marshals back on top 11-9 in the second quarter. Massac’s Noah Taylor tied the game before a free throw by Reed was followed by a coast to coast basket, also by Reed, to put the Marshals up 14-11, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.

Leading 23-13, the Marshals turned the ball over two straight times down the court into the hands of Roundtree who converted both for points to cut the lead to 23-17. To close out the first half, French hit two baskets and Walters added two free throws to put the Marshals up 29-19 at the halftime break.

Leading by 12 in the third quarter, the Marshals full court press forced a Patriot turnover that led to a basket by Lucas Nichols and 14 point lead, finishing out the third quarter leading 43-29.

The Marshals went on to out-score Massac County 21-16 in the fourth quarter behind 7 points from Walters for the 64-45 win. Aaron Reed was selected MVP of the game with 16 points and 7 rebounds. They will meet Hopkinsville in the 1:00 on Saturday.
