Christian County, Sunrise Christian win in Thursday’s Hoopfest

DRAFFENVILLE – Game #3 of the 2016 Hoopfest featured Western Kentucky teams Graves County taking on reigning Region 2 champion Christian County.  Christian County took control from the opening tip, leading 18-9 at the end of the first quarter and 27-19 at halftime.

The Colonels out-scored the Eagles by 10 points in the third quarter to stretch their lead out to 50-32. Graves County made a run in the fourth quarter behind three’s from Ryan Mathis to cut into the Christian County lead but their early deficit was too much to overcome, falling to the Colonels 68-57.

Graves County senior Chris Vogt, who set a new state record for most blocks in a single season last year, has signed with Northern Kentucky University. In his 13 minutes of play against the Colonels, Vogt scored 8 points and blocked 3 shots. The Eagles were led in scoring by Mathis with 17 points. Taivey Mason led Christian County with 21 points with 17 added by Coastal Carolina signee Jaylen Sebree.

The final game of Thursday’s opening night of the Hoopfest featured a game between Sunrise Christian, Kansas and The Tech Academy in Canada. Sunrise senior 6’9″ Isiah Jasey has signed with Texas A & M and his future head coach and former Murray State head coach Billy Kennedy, was on hand to watch his future player.

Sunrise Christian easily handled The Tech Academy winning 42-28 despite facing the Maker cousins, 6’9″ senior Matur, younger brother of Hoopfest favorite Thon who was drafted in the 10th round by the Milwaukee Bucks and 6’11” freshman Makur.

Thon and Matur, born in Sudan and fleeing the country during the civil war to Australia, both made their way to Canada to complete their high school basketball careers. Younger cousin Makur, from Southern California, is fairly new to basketball coming from a background in soccer, switching his interest to basketball and joining his cousin in Canada.
