BENTON – We would like to invite you to our first annual Trim a Tree for Wildlife event that will raise support and awareness of the goals and needs of the Friends of Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge. Established to protect bottomland hardwood forest habitat and wildlife resources, in 1997, Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge became the only National Wildlife Refuge solely within the State of Kentucky. Soon after the refuge was established, volunteers from the community starting helping work towards the mission of the refuge, and in 1999 the Friends of Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge was established.
The Friends of Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge is a group of volunteers that recognize the refuge’s benefits to the community and are dedicated to its goals. The Friends assist with various activities such as the establishment and restoration of wildlife habitat (planting trees, purchasing land and donating it to the refuge, etc.), environmental education programs (paying for buses on field trips, helping conduct programs, etc.), speaking to congressional representatives on behalf of the refuge, and increasing wildlife recreation opportunities.
